Inverted Echo Sounder

Introduction

The model 1050 Smart Inverted Echo Sounder (SmartIES) Inverted
Echo Sounder (IES) is an integrated system designed for long term
submergence in the deep ocean, consisting of the following sub-systems:

- acoustic transponder,
- acoustic command receiver,
- burn wire release mechanism,
- range gated inverted echo-sounder,
- High accuracy pressure sensor,
- PC-104 based data logger
- Battery

System Description

The mechanical design of the SmartIES integrates the acoustics
and control electronics onto a single board as shown in the layout
photographs. In addition, a custom battery pack that contains the
batteries for the transponder and the IES electronics

SmartIES Electronics

The SmartIES electronics are packaged on a single P.C. Board,
mounted on an aluminum plate positioned over the battery pack and
optional pressure transducer. This board contains:
  • SmartIES Receiver

  • SmartIES Control Electronics (HC-11 based)

  • PC-104 CPU board

  • PCMCIA 10 megabyte flash disk

  • Power regulation/control and distribution hardware

  • Acoustic transmitter

  • Transponder electronics

  • Enable command electronics

  • Release command electronics

  • Burn wire electronics

Interface to the user is made by way of a 4 pin Brantner SeaCon connector
mounted on the sphere, and accessible via two holes in the hardhat assembly.
